Herbs, Oils & Nature: Butterbur

Having a migraine? Butterbur.

Start reaping the benefits today! The gargantuan leaves and creeping rhizomes of butterbur are sources of an extract for migraine pain. However, this plant has been used for various respiratory conditions including, coughs and asthma. The Perasites Hybridus or Butterbur, is also known to herbal practitioners to reduce inflammations and as treatment for symptoms of seasonal allergies (allergic rhinitis) without drowsiness or other side effects associated with antihistamines.

Butterbur needs space with a moist and rich soil if you are thinking of growing them. However, this plant particularly contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA). This a group of compounds that can be toxic to the liver. Products that are “PA free” should be used. As a precaution, the use of butterbur for pregnancy and/or lactation is very much discouraged.

It is always a good practice to consult your doctor before using products that are foreign to you.
